What It Is
The official meta-framework for Svelte. What Next.js is to React, SvelteKit is to Svelte. Provides routing, SSG, SSR, API endpoints, and build tooling on top of Svelte's compiler-based approach.
Why It Exists
Svelte alone handles UI components. SvelteKit adds everything needed for a production website: file-based routing, server-side rendering, data loading, form handling, and deployment adapters.
Strengths and Weaknesses
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| Inherits Svelte's small bundles and performance | Svelte's smaller ecosystem limits library choices |
| Clean, intuitive file-based routing | Fewer charting/visualization libraries than React |
| Built-in form actions (progressive enhancement) | Smaller community — harder to find help |
| Vite-powered — fast dev server | Less battle-tested in large production apps |
When to Use / When Not to Use
Use when: Want Svelte's performance + full-stack capabilities, building content or moderate-interactivity apps.
Don't use when: Need React's library ecosystem (charts, 3D, complex UI components), hiring for React-experienced team.
